COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education in Integrated Social Studies requires students to complete a structured curriculum of at least 121 credit hours, with a minimum grade of C in all major courses. The program provides a strong interdisciplinary foundation across key social science subjects, including economics, history, political science, psychology, sociology, and women’s studies. Core courses cover microeconomics and macroeconomics, world and U.S. history, American politics, general psychology, sociology, and critical social topics, helping students develop a broad understanding of social systems and human behavior. A psychology elective further deepens students’ knowledge of human development and social interactions.In addition to content knowledge, the program includes extensive professional education coursework designed to prepare students for teaching careers. These courses focus on social justice in education, teaching adolescents, social studies curriculum and pedagogy, instructional methods, educational psychology, educational technology, and inclusive education. Students also complete a fieldwork practicum and a full student teaching experience, providing hands-on classroom exposure and practical teaching skills. A capstone course emphasizes inquiry into professional practice, helping students refine their teaching abilities.Students must choose a concentration in Economics, Geography, History, Political Science, or Sociology, allowing them to specialize while maintaining an integrated understanding of social studies. Each concentration includes advanced coursework and electives tailored to that discipline, such as economic theory and policy, geographic analysis, historical studies across regions and time periods, political systems and international relations, or sociological perspectives on society and inequality. These options allow students to customize their academic path based on career interests.Additional requirements include general education courses in composition, mathematics, fine arts, social sciences, and basic sciences with laboratory experience. Overall, the program combines strong content knowledge, teaching methodology, and real-world experience, preparing graduates to become effective secondary school social studies teachers who can foster critical thinking, civic awareness, and active participation among students.
