COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education in Early Childhood Education is designed to prepare students for professional teaching careers from preschool through fifth grade, focusing on both theory and practical application. The program emphasizes the development of knowledge and skills essential for creating inclusive and effective learning environments for diverse learners. Students begin with foundational courses in child development, early childhood services, and education in a democratic society, progressing through courses that cover teaching literacy, mathematics, science, social studies, and the arts in preschool and elementary classrooms. They also explore culturally and linguistically sustaining pedagogies, family-school-community partnerships, and educational psychology, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of student development and learning strategies.A key feature of the program is the extensive field and clinical experiences embedded throughout the curriculum. Students engage in multiple clinical experiences and internships across preschool and elementary classrooms, including urban and inclusive settings, accumulating approximately 1,200 hours of hands-on practice. These experiences allow students to apply theoretical knowledge in real classroom contexts, develop classroom management skills, and work with children who are typically developing, at-risk, gifted, or have mild to moderate exceptionalities. Courses in educational technology, guidance and assessment, and international frameworks provide additional tools for preparing students to address diverse learning needs and educational challenges.The program also integrates general education requirements, including coursework in communication, mathematics, science, humanities, and social sciences, to support a well-rounded educational foundation. By combining rigorous academic preparation, practical teaching experiences, and professional development, graduates are equipped to meet the demands of modern classrooms. Those who successfully complete the program and pass the State of Ohio Assessment Tests are eligible for licensure in Early Childhood Education in Ohio, enabling them to teach children from age three through fifth grade.
