COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education in Integrated Language Arts requires students to complete a comprehensive curriculum totaling at least 120 credit hours, with a minimum grade of C in all major courses. The program combines coursework in communication, literature, linguistics, media studies, and theater to build a strong foundation in language arts content. Core courses include human communication, creative writing, Shakespeare, world literature, literary study, composition theory, linguistics, British literature, media writing, journalism teaching, and theater arts. Students also complete specialized electives in British literature, diverse and inclusive literature topics, U.S. literature, and linguistics, allowing them to deepen their subject knowledge. Additional electives in communication, English, media and journalism, theater, and foreign languages provide further flexibility and academic breadth.In addition to content courses, the program includes extensive professional education requirements that prepare students for teaching careers. These include courses in social justice in education, principles of teaching adolescents, educational psychology, educational technology, and teaching methods for reading, literature, language, and composition in secondary classrooms. Students also complete fieldwork practicum and a full student teaching experience, which provide hands-on classroom practice and real-world teaching exposure. A capstone course focused on professional inquiry helps students reflect on and refine their teaching practices.General education requirements include courses in composition, mathematics, social sciences, and basic sciences with laboratory experience, ensuring a well-rounded academic background. The curriculum emphasizes both subject mastery and pedagogical skills, integrating theory with practice to prepare students for licensure and effective teaching.
