COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental and Conservation Biology is designed to prepare students for careers in environmental science through an interdisciplinary curriculum that integrates biology with supporting fields such as earth sciences, geography, chemistry, and mathematics. The major requires foundational courses in biological diversity, biological foundations, genetics, ecology, and evolution, complemented by quantitative methods and writing in the biological sciences. Students also complete laboratory components in general chemistry and earth science, alongside courses in geographic information science and analytic geometry and calculus. The program allows students to tailor their studies with electives in biology, earth science, chemistry, and geography, which provide practical and research experiences through internships, individual investigations, or senior honors theses. Concentrations in Conservation Biology or Environmental Policy and Management help students focus on specific career paths. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, including fieldwork and experiential courses, to develop analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills essential for environmental careers. Students explore topics such as geomorphology, water resources, environmental geochemistry, marine processes, climate change, conservation of natural resources, urban sustainability, and advanced geographic information science. By combining rigorous scientific training with applied experiences, the program equips graduates with the skills needed to pursue careers as wildlife ecologists, environmental educators, forest managers, environmental consultants, or professionals in public agencies responsible for environmental regulation and land-use planning.
