COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Community Health Education at Kent State University is designed to equip students with the knowledge and skills needed to promote health and wellness in diverse populations. The program emphasizes evidence-based health practices, community engagement, and applied learning, preparing graduates for careers in schools, organizations, public health agencies, and community programs. Students begin with foundational courses in personal health, community health education, and introductory health education, building a solid understanding of health promotion principles. Core courses include health education theories, methods and applications of health education, human sexuality, marketing in health education, and program planning and evaluation, which provide both theoretical and practical expertise. Students also complete a nine-credit internship in community health education, gaining hands-on experience in real-world settings. A data analysis elective allows students to develop skills in biostatistics, quantitative psychology methods, or social science data analysis, enhancing their ability to evaluate health programs and interpret research. Additional coursework in human biology, nutrition, environmental health, communication, media, philosophy, and educational technology ensures a well-rounded perspective and prepares students to address health challenges from multiple angles. Health education electives offer flexibility for students to explore specialized topics such as medical terminology, drug use and misuse, consumer health, stress management, health coaching, sexuality education, and prevention programs for HIV/AIDS, drug abuse, and violence. The curriculum also includes Kent Core requirements in composition, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, basic sciences, and additional elective courses to meet the minimum total of 120 credit hours. Through a combination of classroom instruction, laboratory work, applied projects, and community-based experiences, students develop essential skills in communication, leadership, program development, and critical thinking. Graduates are prepared to make a meaningful impact on public health, promote wellness in communities, and pursue advanced studies or professional certifications in health education, public health, and related fields.
