COURSE CURRICULUM

Kent State University's Bachelor of Science in Chemistry offers a flexible program with three specialized concentrations: Chemistry, Industrial Chemistry, and Materials Chemistry. The degree combines foundational coursework in general, organic, analytical, and inorganic chemistry with advanced study in physical chemistry, biological chemistry, and laboratory techniques. Students gain a thorough grounding in chemical principles through both lecture and laboratory experiences while developing critical problem-solving and analytical skills.All students complete core courses in general chemistry, organic chemistry, and laboratory work, as well as calculus and physics, ensuring a strong quantitative and scientific foundation. The Chemistry concentration emphasizes advanced analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry courses, including laboratory work and an upper-division elective approved by the department. This track prepares students for graduate studies or research-based careers in chemistry.The Industrial Chemistry concentration incorporates chemistry courses along with applied topics such as physical chemistry for life sciences, materials physics, and economics. Students also take electives in project management, accounting, internships, or individual investigation to prepare for careers in industrial or commercial chemical applications. Laboratory work and research experiences enhance practical skills in real-world industrial contexts.The Materials Chemistry concentration focuses on chemical principles applied to materials science, including inorganic and organic materials chemistry, nanomaterials, surface chemistry, and physical chemistry. Students also complete advanced laboratory courses, calculus, and physics. Elective courses allow further specialization through analytical, organic, or physical chemistry labs, as well as research projects.All concentrations require completion of Kent Core requirements, foreign language, and general electives to reach the 120-credit-hour minimum. Students gain extensive laboratory experience, research opportunities, and elective options tailored to their concentration, providing a strong foundation for careers in chemical research, teaching, industrial applications, or materials science.
