COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Biology at Kent State University provides students with a strong foundation in the biological sciences while incorporating a liberal arts perspective. The program emphasizes the study of living systems at multiple levels, from molecules and cells to organisms and ecosystems, preparing students for a variety of scientific careers or further graduate study. Core courses include Biological Diversity, Biological Foundations, Elements of Genetics, and Evolution, which provide a comprehensive understanding of the principles and processes that govern life. Laboratory courses in general and organic chemistry, as well as hands-on biology labs, equip students with practical skills in experimentation, analysis, and scientific inquiry. Writing in the Biological Sciences develops communication skills, enabling students to effectively present scientific research and findings. Students also complete Calculus and other foundational mathematics courses to support quantitative reasoning and problem-solving in biology.The program offers concentrations in Molecular and Cellular Biology, Organismal Biology, and Pre-Medicine/Pre-Podiatry/Pre-Dentistry, allowing students to tailor their education to specific interests and career goals. The Molecular and Cellular Biology concentration focuses on cellular processes, molecular genetics, and biochemistry, preparing students for careers in research, biotechnology, or medicine. The Organismal Biology concentration emphasizes the study of organisms, ecology, and environmental interactions, equipping students for work in conservation, wildlife management, or ecological research. The Pre-Medicine/Pre-Professional concentration supports students pursuing medical, dental, or podiatric programs.Additional requirements include general electives, foreign language study, and Kent Core courses in composition, humanities, and fine arts, providing a well-rounded education that develops critical thinking, communication, and cultural awareness. Laboratory experience, upper-division electives, and research opportunities prepare students for both professional careers and graduate study.
