COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music degree in Music Education includes a comprehensive set of program requirements designed to prepare students for successful teaching careers in K–12 settings. The curriculum begins with foundational courses such as Theory I–IV and Piano Class I–II, which help students build essential musical knowledge and keyboard skills. Students also complete courses in wind, percussion, string and voice techniques, ensuring they gain practical experience with a wide range of instruments and vocal methods. These courses are critical for future music educators who will be expected to teach diverse groups of students in school settings.As students progress, they take specialized music education courses such as Music Teaching as a Profession, General Music Methods, Choral Music Methods and Instrumental Music Methods. These courses focus on teaching strategies, lesson planning and classroom management tailored specifically to music education. Conducting courses, including Introduction to Conducting and Conducting and Leadership in Schools, help students develop the skills needed to lead ensembles effectively. In addition, students explore music education technology and progressive music methods, which prepare them to integrate modern tools and diverse musical styles into their teaching.Performance remains a key component of the program. Students complete applied music electives at both intermediate and advanced levels and participate in large ensembles such as orchestra, choir or band, as well as jazz and non-western ensembles. These experiences enhance their musicianship and provide real-world performance practice.A significant part of the program is the student teaching experience, where students spend time in real classrooms applying their knowledge under supervision. Supporting coursework in psychology, philosophy and education further strengthens their understanding of learners and teaching environments. Overall, the program requires a minimum of 127 credit hours and provides a balanced combination of musical training, teaching skills and hands-on experience necessary for a career in music education.
