COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theatre program requirements are carefully structured to develop students into well-rounded performers with strong skills in acting, singing and dance. The curriculum begins with foundational courses such as Piano Class I and II, Musical Theatre Performance I and II and Making Theatre: Culture and Practice. These courses introduce students to the basics of performance, stage production and musical understanding. Students also take specialized courses in music theory, ear training and sight singing, which help strengthen their musical abilities and prepare them for vocal performance.As students progress, they engage in more advanced acting and performance training through courses like Acting Process, Character and Scene Study I and II and Musical Theatre Performance III and IV. A major component of the program is Applied Voice for Musical Theatre, which students take multiple times to continuously develop vocal technique and stage presence. In addition, courses such as Global Theatre Histories and American Musical Theatre History provide important context about the evolution of theatre and performance styles.Dance training is another essential part of the program, with students completing a wide range of dance electives including ballet, jazz, tap, modern and musical theatre dance styles. This ensures versatility and adaptability, which are crucial for professional performers. Students also gain hands-on experience through practicum courses, design and technology work and performance opportunities such as the Porthouse Performance Experience.The program allows further specialization through guided upper-division electives and additional theatre, music and dance courses, including acting for the camera, playwriting and audition techniques. These options help students refine their skills and prepare for specific career paths. Overall, the program requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and provides intensive, practical training along with academic knowledge, equipping students with the experience and confidence needed for careers in musical theatre.
