COURSE CURRICULUM

Kent State University maintains distinct admissions policies based on campus, student type, and academic background. First-year students applying to the Kent Campus face a selective admission process that considers cumulative high school grade point average, the rigor of their college preparatory curriculum, and grade trends. Applicants who do not meet Kent Campus requirements may be administratively referred to one of the university’s seven regional campuses—Ashtabula, East Liverpool, Geauga, Salem, Stark, Trumbull, Tuscarawas—or the Twinsburg Academic Center to begin their college coursework. Regional campuses offer open admission to first-year students holding a high school diploma or its equivalent, providing broad access to higher education. International students must demonstrate English language proficiency, either through standardized testing or by completing courses at Kent State’s English as a Second Language Center, unless they meet specific exemption criteria. Former Kent State students or graduates who have not attended another institution since leaving the university may apply for reenrollment or reinstatement through the University Registrar’s website. Transfer students seeking admission into the major must meet a minimum overall GPA of 2.0. Additionally, certain foundational courses—including COMM 15000, ENG 21011, and MATH 11010—require a minimum grade of C, while accounting courses ACCT 23020 and ACCT 23021 require a minimum grade of B-. Students who do not meet the B- threshold in both accounting courses but maintain an average GPA of at least 2.7 may request consideration from the Department of Accounting for an override to enroll in junior-level accounting courses. These policies collectively ensure that Kent State maintains academic standards while providing multiple pathways for first-year, transfer, international, and returning students to successfully begin or continue their college education.
