COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Studio Art offers a comprehensive liberal arts foundation while providing students with extensive training in visual arts techniques and theory. The major emphasizes skill development in both two-dimensional and three-dimensional art forms, as well as digital media, allowing students to explore a variety of creative processes. Core courses include 2D Composition, 3D Composition, Digital Media, Drawing I, and a Studio Art Capstone, complemented by Art History courses covering ancient, medieval, Renaissance, modern, and contemporary periods. Upper-division electives in Art History and Studio Art provide opportunities for students to specialize and refine their creative voice.Students choose from a range of foundations electives such as Drawing II, Painting, Print Media, Sculpture, Photography, Ceramics, Glass Working, Jewelry Metals, and Weaving. These electives encourage experimentation and mastery of different media, supporting both technical skill and conceptual development. The program integrates critique, portfolio development, and professional practices to prepare students for careers in art, design, education, or further graduate studies.Additional requirements include courses that do not count toward the major GPA, such as Kent Core composition, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, basic sciences with a laboratory component, and general electives. These courses ensure a well-rounded liberal arts education while supporting the development of critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills. Students also take UC 10001, providing an introduction to university life.The curriculum totals 120 credit hours, including 39 upper-division credits, ensuring that students gain both breadth and depth in their education. Overall, the program blends rigorous studio training with a liberal arts perspective, fostering creativity, cultural awareness, and professional readiness for students pursuing careers in the visual arts or related fields.
