COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Russian Literature, Culture, and Translation at Kent State University is designed to develop professional-level proficiency in the Russian language while providing a deep understanding of Russian literature and culture across historical periods, including the pre-revolutionary empire, the Soviet era, and contemporary post-Soviet society. Students engage with diverse media, such as literature, film, and television, to explore cultural, historical, and social contexts. The program emphasizes translation skills, equipping students to translate various pragmatic texts from Russian to English. The curriculum begins with foundational language courses, progressing to intermediate and advanced levels, including intensive grammar, composition, and conversation. Courses in Russian phonetics, diction, modern writers, and Russian civilization help refine linguistic competence while providing cultural literacy. Upper-division electives in Russian language, literature, and translation allow students to tailor their studies to specific interests, enhancing both academic and professional preparation. Additional courses in Modern and Classical Language Studies expand students’ linguistic and analytical skills, fostering versatility in global communication. Beyond language and literature, students also complete general education requirements, including Kent Core courses in composition, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, and basic sciences, ensuring a well-rounded academic foundation.
