COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science at Kent State University provides a structured yet flexible curriculum designed to build a strong foundation in political systems, theory and research while allowing students to specialize in their area of interest. The major begins with introductory courses in comparative politics or world politics and American politics or public policy, giving students a broad understanding of both domestic and global political systems. Students then develop analytical and research skills through courses such as research methods and political thought or political economy, followed by a senior-level seminar in areas like American politics, public policy or international relations, which emphasizes advanced writing and critical analysis.The program includes both general political science electives and upper-division coursework, allowing students to deepen their knowledge in specific topics. In addition to major requirements, students complete a range of general education courses, including composition, mathematics, humanities, social sciences, basic sciences and foreign language study, ensuring a well-rounded liberal arts education. A minimum of 120 credit hours is required for graduation.A key feature of the program is the choice of concentration, which allows students to tailor their academic path. The American Politics concentration focuses on institutions and processes within the United States, including Congress, the presidency, courts, public opinion and media. The International Relations–Comparative Politics concentration explores global issues such as international conflict, development, regional politics and global organizations. The Public Policy concentration emphasizes how governments design and implement policies on issues like healthcare, environment and social welfare, along with policy analysis skills. The General concentration offers flexibility, allowing students to select upper-division courses based on their individual interests.Overall, the program combines theoretical knowledge, research skills and practical flexibility, preparing students for careers in government, law, international organizations and beyond, as well as for advanced academic study.
