COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy at Kent State University combines rigorous coursework in traditional and contemporary philosophical thought with opportunities to explore diverse perspectives and specialized areas of study. The major equips students with the skills to think critically, reason logically, and analyze complex concepts, preparing them for careers in law, business, medicine, technology, education, journalism, social work, and other fields where critical thinking and ethical reasoning are essential. Students begin with foundational courses such as Introduction to Philosophy, Introduction to Ethics, and Introduction to Formal Logic, or Intermediate Logic, which provide a grounding in philosophical methods, moral reasoning, and formal argumentation. The curriculum continues with surveys of Ancient, Early Modern, and Late Modern Philosophy, ensuring a comprehensive understanding of the development of philosophical ideas over time. Upper-division electives allow students to deepen their study in philosophy, including Philosophers in Depth, which fulfills the writing-intensive requirement, as well as other 30000- and 40000-level courses that enhance analytical, research, and communication skills. In addition, students select a Philosophical Pluralism Elective, such as Environmental Philosophy, Feminist Philosophy, Philosophy of Art and Beauty, or Seminar in Asian Philosophy, to broaden their understanding of non-Western and applied philosophical traditions. Beyond major-specific coursework, students complete general education and Kent Core requirements, including composition, mathematics and critical reasoning, fine arts, social sciences, basic sciences with laboratory experience, and additional electives, ensuring a well-rounded liberal arts education. Foreign language study is also integrated to support global awareness and cross-cultural competence. Through this combination of rigorous philosophical study, practical application, and interdisciplinary exploration, students develop intellectual flexibility, ethical insight, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively. The program’s flexible curriculum allows for double majors, minors, or tailored academic paths, providing a strong foundation for graduate study or diverse professional careers.
