COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Music program requires a minimum of 120 credit hours and provides a balanced combination of music theory, history, performance and general education. The major requirements focus on building a strong musical foundation through a sequence of theory courses, beginning with Theory I and II and advancing to Theory III and IV, which develop students’ understanding of musical structure, harmony and composition. Students also complete piano courses to build basic performance skills, with options such as fundamentals of jazz piano or piano class.Music history is another key component, with courses in Western music history that explore the development of music across different time periods, along with writing-intensive elements to strengthen analytical and communication skills. Students are also required to complete a recital or music research project, which provides practical or scholarly experience in music. In addition, they choose a music elective from advanced topics such as music theory, literature or specialized seminars, allowing them to explore specific interests. Ensemble participation is also required through non-Western or small ensemble electives, giving students hands-on performance experience in groups such as jazz ensembles, choirs or world music ensembles.Beyond the major, students complete additional requirements including a course in arts applications or music career development, along with general education courses in composition, mathematics, humanities, social sciences and basic sciences. A significant portion of the program is dedicated to a minor and non-music electives, encouraging interdisciplinary learning. Students may also choose a concentration, such as Jazz Studies, or follow general requirements without a concentration. Overall, the program offers flexibility while ensuring strong musical training, preparing students for diverse careers in music and related fields.
