COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts degree in Gender and Sexuality Studies requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, including major courses, electives, foreign language requirements, general education, and additional electives to meet credit-hour and upper-division requirements. Core major courses, which count toward the major GPA, provide students with foundational and advanced knowledge in the field. These include Introduction to Gender and Sexuality Studies, Methodologies and Praxis in Gender and Sexuality Studies, Gender and Sexuality Roundtable, and Seminar in Gender and Sexuality Studies. Students also select electives in three key categories: Discourse, Identity, and Human Dynamics; Thematic Studies; and Theory and Thought, each totaling three credit hours. These electives allow students to explore topics such as gender and language, history of women in the United States, transgender studies, queer theory, feminist philosophy, global feminisms, and social justice issues, providing a broad, intersectional perspective on gender and sexuality.In addition, students complete nine credit hours of major electives drawn from courses across disciplines such as Africana Studies, Communications, Criminology, English, Health Education, History, Jewish Studies, Political Science, Sociology, Theatre, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. These electives offer opportunities for in-depth study of specific populations, social movements, historical contexts, and critical frameworks.Additional program requirements outside the major include UC 10001: Flashes 101, a foreign language requirement (10–16 credit hours), and Kent Core coursework in composition, mathematics and critical reasoning, humanities and fine arts, social sciences, basic sciences (including one laboratory), and additional Kent Core courses. General electives provide flexibility to ensure students meet the 120-credit-hour minimum, including at least 39 upper-division credits.This curriculum equips students with critical thinking, research, and communication skills while fostering an understanding of historical, cultural, and social forces that shape gender and sexuality. Graduates are prepared for careers in advocacy, social services, education, public policy, research, and other professional fields focused on equity, diversity, and social justice.
