COURSE CURRICULUM

Kent State University's Bachelor of Arts in Classics program provides students with a comprehensive exploration of the languages, literature, and cultures of ancient Greece and Rome. The major emphasizes both classical languages and cultural studies, offering courses in Greek and Roman history, literature, and archaeology, along with elementary Latin instruction. Students can choose electives in related fields such as art history, religion, sociology, and foreign languages, allowing them to tailor their studies to specific interests and interdisciplinary approaches.The curriculum requires foundational courses such as The Greek Achievement, The Roman Achievement, and a study of either Greek or Roman history. Literature courses, including Literature of the Ancient Greeks or Literature of the Roman World, are writing-intensive and encourage critical engagement with primary texts. Archaeology and art courses, such as Greek Archaeology and Art or Roman Archaeology and Art, provide insights into the material culture of the classical world. Students also complete a series of language courses beginning with elementary Latin and may continue with upper-level Latin or Greek courses to deepen their linguistic proficiency.Additional requirements include foundational university courses in composition, mathematics, social sciences, fine arts, basic sciences, and general electives, ensuring a well-rounded education. Classics Culture and Language electives offer interdisciplinary perspectives on ancient societies, including religious studies, sociology, and cultural studies. Graduates gain analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in education, museums, cultural heritage, publishing, and public service, as well as for advanced studies in classics, history, or related disciplines.
