COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry program at Kent State University is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in chemical principles, laboratory skills, and quantitative reasoning, preparing them for careers in research, education, or industry, as well as for graduate studies in chemistry or related fields.The major consists of core courses in general, organic, inorganic, analytical, biological, and physical chemistry, along with corresponding laboratory experiences to develop hands-on experimental skills. Students begin with general chemistry and introductory labs, then progress to organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, and physical chemistry courses. The curriculum also includes a course in biological chemistry to integrate chemical principles with life sciences applications.Mathematics and physics courses are required to ensure students gain essential quantitative and analytical skills. Mathematics courses include algebra for calculus, trigonometry, and analytic geometry and calculus, while physics courses cover general college physics with laboratory components. These courses provide the tools necessary to analyze chemical phenomena, solve complex problems, and interpret experimental data.Students select additional chemistry electives from advanced courses, including analytical chemistry II, advanced biological chemistry, intermediate organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry III, and individual investigations. These electives allow students to explore specialized areas of chemistry, pursue independent research, and tailor their degree to their career goals.Beyond the major, students complete general education requirements in composition, humanities, fine arts, social sciences, and foreign language, fostering critical thinking, communication, and cultural awareness. General electives help students achieve a total of at least 120 credit hours, including 39 upper-division credits.Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts in Chemistry program gain a deep understanding of chemical principles, laboratory techniques, and scientific reasoning. They are well-prepared to enter careers in chemical research, teaching, industrial laboratories, or to pursue advanced degrees in chemistry, biochemistry, or related disciplines.
