COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Africana Studies program requires students to complete a structured set of courses that provide a strong foundation in the history, culture, and intellectual traditions of people of African descent. Core courses include subjects such as Black Images, Black Experience from early history to the present, theoretical approaches, research methods, and oral and written discourse, all of which help students develop critical thinking, research, and communication skills. Students also explore Black social and political thought, gaining deeper insight into the ideas and movements that have shaped African and African diasporic experiences globally.In addition to required courses, students must complete a selection of major electives, allowing them to explore specialized topics such as African arts, Caribbean studies, African American literature, Black feminism, gender and sexuality, hip hop culture, Afro-Latinx communities, and social justice movements. These electives provide flexibility and enable students to tailor their studies based on personal interests and career goals while expanding their understanding of diverse perspectives within Africana Studies.Beyond the major, students are required to complete additional academic components, including foreign language study, composition, mathematics, fine arts, social sciences, and basic sciences, ensuring a well-rounded education. General electives make up a significant portion of the program, allowing further exploration across disciplines. The program requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, including upper-division coursework, to graduate. Overall, this curriculum combines core knowledge, specialized study, and broad academic exposure to prepare students for careers in education, public service, and cultural fields, as well as for advanced academic pursuits.
