COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Counseling Psychology program is structured to be completed over three years and includes both academic coursework and clinical training. Classes are typically scheduled for two to three courses per term, held two nights a week from 6–9 p.m. or 6–10 p.m., offering flexibility for working professionals. A key graduation requirement includes 280 direct client contact hours completed during the practicum sequence, alongside a personal commitment to complete 20 hours of individual psychotherapy during the course of the program.In the first year, students gain foundational knowledge in counseling with courses such as Essential Counseling Skills and Treatment Planning, Advanced Counseling Theories, and Law and Ethics. Additional coursework covers key areas like lifespan development, psychopathology, assessment techniques, and therapy approaches for children, adolescents, couples, and families. Students are also trained in handling trauma, crisis, and community mental health challenges.During the second year, students continue building clinical skills through coursework in career counseling, group therapy, human sexuality, psychopharmacology, and cultural diversity. Research methods and the practicum sequence begin this year, allowing students to apply classroom learning in real-world settings under supervision.In the third year, students complete advanced coursework in addictions therapy and finish their clinical training with a final capstone practicum. Elective options such as Advanced Child and Family Therapy or Advanced Couple and Marital Therapy allow students to tailor their learning to specific interests. This comprehensive curriculum prepares students for licensure and professional practice in various mental health settings.
