COURSE CURRICULUM

The Secondary Education programs in English and Social Studies at Gannon University, offered through the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, are designed to prepare future educators with strong subject knowledge, effective teaching strategies and professional skills. In the English/Secondary Education program, students develop a deep understanding of language, literature and communication. They learn to apply linguistic theory to analyze language structures and explore the relationships between language, culture and society. Students also strengthen their ability to read critically and produce rhetorically effective writing across multiple genres and contexts. Through the study of literature and media, they analyze both print and non-print communication while learning how technology and visual media influence modern communication. In addition, students conduct research and present their findings effectively, building essential academic and professional skills. The Social Studies/Secondary Education program focuses on developing a comprehensive understanding of historical, political, economic and cultural developments in both Western and non-Western societies. Students examine global perspectives and analyze how factors such as race, class and gender influence historical events and social trends. They also develop strong analytical and communication abilities, including the capacity to write thesis-driven papers and present well-supported arguments in both written and oral formats. Across both programs, teacher candidates are trained to assess and analyze student learning and adapt their instruction to support diverse and exceptional learners. They learn to create positive classroom environments that promote a culture of learning while continuously monitoring student progress. Additionally, the programs emphasize the importance of professional collaboration and reflective practice. Graduates establish strong relationships with colleagues, students, parents and the wider community to enhance student learning and contribute positively to educational environments. Through this comprehensive preparation, graduates are well equipped to become effective secondary school educators.
