COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education programs at Gannon University, offered through the College of Humanities, Education and Social Sciences, are designed to prepare students with the knowledge and practical skills needed to support the development and learning of young children. These programs include both associate and bachelor’s degree options, each focusing on building strong educational foundations while preparing future educators to work effectively with students, families, and communities.In the Associate of Science programs in Early Childhood Education and Early Childhood/Early Intervention, students develop a strong understanding of child development and early learning. They study how young children grow intellectually, socially, emotionally, and physically during the early stages of life. In addition, students learn how to select and administer evidence-based assessments that help educators understand children’s abilities and developmental progress. These assessments allow teachers to identify individual needs and support early learning more effectively. The programs also emphasize the importance of professional collaboration, encouraging students to build and reflect on ongoing relationships with colleagues, parents, and community members to enhance student learning and development.At the bachelor’s degree level, including programs such as Early Childhood PreK–4 and Early Childhood PreK–4 with Special Education PreK–12, students further develop their expertise in educational theory and teaching practices. Candidates demonstrate knowledge of research-based educational belief systems along with strong pedagogical and subject-matter content. They are trained to create classroom environments that promote a strong culture of learning, where students feel encouraged to explore, participate, and grow academically.Another key component of these programs is the ability to assess and analyze student learning. Teacher candidates learn to evaluate student progress and make appropriate adjustments to instruction. This includes differentiating teaching strategies to support diverse learners and students with exceptional needs. Throughout the programs, candidates also learn the importance of maintaining professional relationships with colleagues, students, parents, school districts, and the broader community. By building these partnerships, graduates of Gannon University are well prepared to support student success and contribute positively to educational environments.
