COURSE CURRICULUM

The biology programs at Gannon University, offered through the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences, are designed to provide students with a strong foundation in biological sciences while developing important analytical, research, and communication skills. Students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Biology begin by completing a three-course introductory biology sequence, BIOL 122 through BIOL 127. Through these courses, students gain a fundamental understanding of biological principles, including cell structure, genetics, evolution, and the interactions between organisms and their environments. This foundational knowledge prepares students for more advanced study within the biology major.As students progress through the program, they expand their understanding of biological and other scientific concepts through advanced coursework and laboratory experiences. These courses allow students to explore specialized topics in the life sciences while strengthening their scientific reasoning. Throughout the program, students develop critical thinking and analytical skills that help them evaluate scientific information, conduct experiments, and interpret research findings. These abilities are essential for students who plan to pursue careers in healthcare, research, environmental science, biotechnology, or other life science fields.Students who choose the Biology Secondary Education track, offered as either a Bachelor of Arts or a Bachelor of Science, gain additional preparation for teaching careers. In addition to learning biological concepts, teacher candidates study research-based educational theories and effective teaching methods related to both subject matter and pedagogy. They are trained to create a culture of learning in the classroom that supports student engagement and understanding. Candidates also learn how to assess and analyze student learning outcomes and adjust their instruction accordingly. This includes differentiating instruction to meet the needs of diverse and exceptional learners and monitoring student progress over time.Another important outcome of the program is the development of professional relationships that support student learning. Future educators learn to collaborate with colleagues, students, parents, school districts, and community members. By reflecting on these professional relationships and their teaching practices, candidates strengthen their ability to support student success and contribute positively to the educational community.
