COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology Secondary Education program at Gannon University, offered through the Morosky College of Health Professions and Sciences, is designed to prepare students with both strong scientific knowledge and effective teaching skills. One of the primary learning outcomes of the program is that candidates develop a clear understanding of research-based educational belief systems as well as pedagogical and subject-matter knowledge. This means that future educators learn not only the biological content they will teach but also the most effective teaching methods supported by educational research. By combining scientific knowledge with instructional strategies, candidates are prepared to deliver engaging and meaningful learning experiences in the classroom.Another important outcome of the program is the ability to assess and analyze student learning. Candidates learn how to evaluate students’ understanding through different assessment methods and use this information to improve their teaching. They are trained to adjust their instruction based on student performance and learning needs. This includes differentiating instruction to support diverse learners and students with exceptional needs while also monitoring student progress over time. By developing these skills, candidates become more effective in helping all students succeed academically.The program also emphasizes creating a culture of learning in the classroom. Candidates are encouraged to build supportive and motivating learning environments where students feel comfortable asking questions, exploring scientific ideas, and participating actively in lessons. In addition, future teachers learn the importance of building strong professional relationships. They are trained to collaborate and reflect on ongoing relationships with colleagues, students, parents, school districts, and the broader community in order to enhance student learning and educational success.Along with educational preparation, students also develop strong scientific abilities. They demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills throughout their coursework and laboratory experiences. Students gain a fundamental knowledge of biological principles after completing the three-course introductory biology sequence, BIOL 122 through BIOL 127. As they progress through the biology major, they expand their understanding of biological and other scientific principles, preparing them for both teaching careers and continued professional development in science education.
