COURSE CURRICULUM

The Student Learning Outcomes for the Political Science program at Gannon University focus on developing students’ knowledge, analytical abilities, and research skills in both domestic and international political contexts. Students gain a solid understanding of the principles of the U.S. Founding and Constitution, the functions of the three branches of government, the perspectives of the two main political parties, and major policy issues debated in contemporary U.S. politics.The program also emphasizes comparative politics, teaching students how the U.S. political system compares with other countries, including different regime types, constitutional arrangements, and political trends worldwide. In political theory, students study major ideas and thinkers across classical, Christian, modern, and postmodern periods, and examine the theoretical foundations of democracy.In international relations, students learn about major global actors such as states and the United Nations, the history of international relations, different theoretical approaches, and the causes of war, peace, cooperation, and competition. The curriculum also explores America’s role in world affairs, policy-making processes across branches of government, and contemporary debates in U.S. foreign policy.Students are trained to integrate insights from the four main subfields of political science: American government, comparative politics, political theory, and international relations. The program emphasizes the development of strong research and writing skills, preparing graduates to analyze complex political issues, communicate effectively, and engage thoughtfully in public and professional life. Graduates are well-equipped for careers in government, public policy, international organizations, law, and related fields, as well as for advanced study in political science or law.
