COURSE CURRICULUM

The Business concentration within the Master of Science in Biology program at Fairleigh Dickinson University combines advanced biological sciences with business, management, marketing, accounting, and leadership training to prepare students for careers in biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, healthcare industries, laboratory management, scientific sales, and related business sectors. All students complete the required 2-credit Biology Seminar sequence, including BIOL6900 Biology Seminar I and BIOL6901 Biology Seminar II, which are taken during the fall and spring semesters to strengthen scientific communication, research discussion, and professional presentation skills. Students also complete 18 credits of elective biology coursework selected with approval from the graduate advisor and program director. These electives allow students to tailor the program toward their scientific interests through courses such as Immunology, Molecular Cell Biology, Human Genetics, Human Evolution, Bioethics, Enzymology, Molecular Endocrinology, Advances in Microbiology, Behavioral Ecology, Human Ecology, Darwinian Medicine, Molecular Biology Techniques, Physiology of Disease, Human Physiology, Environmental Risk Assessment, and Wetland and Watershed Resources. The program also offers flexibility through independent studies and interdisciplinary graduate science coursework. Students may complete the degree with or without a research thesis option. Those selecting the thesis pathway complete BIOL7803 Research and Thesis I and BIOL7804 Research and Thesis II, gaining valuable hands-on laboratory and scientific research experience under faculty supervision. In addition to the biology coursework, students complete 12 credits of Business concentration electives chosen from graduate business courses approved by the advisor and director. These courses develop practical business and leadership skills in areas including financial accounting, managerial accounting, economics, entrepreneurship, business law, organizational leadership, sustainability, human resources, strategic marketing, and social media strategy. The 5000-level business courses serve as prerequisites for advanced 6000-level coursework, and students must earn at least a grade of C in selected electives. This interdisciplinary curriculum prepares graduates for leadership and management roles in science-based businesses while also supporting future doctoral, professional, or industry-focused career opportunities.
