COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Teaching program at Fairleigh Dickinson University is designed to prepare highly qualified and professional educators who are academically knowledgeable, pedagogically skilled, technologically proficient, and responsive to the diverse needs of modern learners. The program aims to produce teaching candidates who are competent in subject matter instruction, effective classroom management, culturally responsive teaching, and reflective educational practice while encouraging lifelong learning and professional growth. Graduates are also prepared to meet the requirements for instructional certification through the New Jersey Department of Education. Admission requirements include a bachelor’s degree with a minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.0. Candidates pursuing Early Childhood, Elementary Education, or English as a Second Language certification must hold a liberal arts or science degree or have completed at least 30 credits in mathematics, science, English, or social studies. Secondary education candidates must possess a bachelor’s degree in their intended teaching subject or complete at least 30 credits in the content area, including 15 upper-level credits. Applicants must also submit two recommendation letters, complete an interview with the MAT director or designee, and achieve passing scores on the required Praxis II licensure examinations. The program offers two primary tracks. The Traditional MAT Track is intended for candidates who complete all certification requirements before becoming classroom teachers and includes a full year of student teaching consisting of one part-time and one full-time semester, with most students completing the program within two years. The Alternate Route MAT Track is designed for individuals already employed as classroom teachers while completing certification requirements. Alternate route candidates participate in clinical coursework and receive mentorship from an FDU clinical supervisor across four consecutive semesters. To qualify for alternate route admission, candidates must provide evidence of a Certificate of Eligibility, proof of employment as a teacher of record, and a provisional teaching license issued by the New Jersey Department of Education. The program includes specialized degree plans in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education, Secondary Education, and English as a Second Language, with opportunities for additional endorsements and certifications. Overall, the program prepares educators to become compassionate, knowledgeable, adaptable, and effective teachers capable of supporting student success in diverse educational environments.
