COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University provides students with a broad and flexible scientific education designed to prepare them for careers in science, healthcare, research, education, and professional graduate programs such as medicine or dentistry. The program begins with a strong science core that includes biology, chemistry, and physics courses with associated laboratory training. Students study Biological Diversity, Molecules, Cells and Genes, General Chemistry I and II, and University Physics I and II, building a solid understanding of life sciences, physical sciences, laboratory techniques, and scientific reasoning. The mathematics and computer science component strengthens analytical and quantitative skills through Precalculus, Calculus I, Calculus II, and additional mathematics electives. A major feature of the degree is its flexibility. Students complete a 16-credit upper-division concentration in a single scientific discipline, such as biology, chemistry, or physics, while also taking 12 additional upper-level science credits outside their concentration to broaden interdisciplinary scientific knowledge. The program also includes 24 free elective credits, allowing students to customize their education according to career goals, research interests, or preparation for graduate study. Students interested in teaching can pursue several QUEST accelerated pathways that combine the BS in Science with a Master of Arts in Teaching, including concentrations in elementary education, secondary education, special education, ESL, and preschool through grade three certification. These options are designed for students planning careers in science education while reducing the total time required to complete both degrees. Overall, the program combines rigorous scientific training, flexibility, and interdisciplinary study, helping students develop laboratory competence, quantitative reasoning, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities essential for success in modern scientific, healthcare, educational, and technological careers.
