COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging Science is a comprehensive healthcare program that prepares students for careers in diagnostic and cardiovascular sonography through a combination of academic study, laboratory training, and clinical experience. Students must complete a minimum of 136 credits for the Diagnostic Medical Sonography concentration or 140 credits for the Cardiovascular Sonography concentration. The program begins with three years of study at Fairleigh Dickinson University, where students complete at least 90 credits, including general education and major requirements, before applying for admission to the Rutgers School of Health Professions. If accepted, students complete an additional 15 months of intensive clinical and professional training at Rutgers University. The curriculum provides strong foundations in biology, chemistry, anatomy and physiology, microbiology, organic chemistry, physics, statistics, pathophysiology, medical terminology, healthcare information systems, and bioethics. Students also complete courses in communication, sociology, humanities, behavioral sciences, and global perspectives to strengthen professional, ethical, and interpersonal skills needed in healthcare environments. Laboratory components are integrated throughout science courses to provide practical scientific and technical experience. The program emphasizes critical thinking, patient care, diagnostic procedures, and the use of advanced medical imaging technologies. During the fourth-year clinical training phase at Rutgers, students receive extensive hands-on training in healthcare facilities and may be required to attend laboratory or clinical sites five days a week. This clinical experience allows students to apply classroom knowledge to real patient care situations while developing professional competency in sonography and medical imaging procedures. The curriculum also supports student success through placement assessments in reading, writing, and mathematics, with prerequisite support courses available when needed. Graduates of the program are prepared for national certification examinations, state licensure where required, and careers in hospitals, imaging centers, clinics, physician offices, and other healthcare facilities. Overall, the program combines scientific education, healthcare training, communication skills, and clinical experience to prepare highly skilled medical imaging professionals capable of supporting accurate diagnosis, patient monitoring, and treatment planning.
