COURSE CURRICULUM

The Health Information Management Bachelor of Science program at Fairleigh Dickinson University combines healthcare knowledge, information systems, communication, management, and legal studies to prepare students for professional roles in the healthcare information industry. The curriculum begins with a strong General Education foundation totaling 40 credits. Students develop communication and professional writing skills through WRIT1002 Composition I, WRIT1003 Composition II, and MEDT2005 Professional Communication. Technology and healthcare information systems knowledge is strengthened through MEDT2217 Information Systems and Applications in Health Care, while ethical decision-making is developed through MEDT1130 Bioethics. Students also gain cross-cultural awareness through UNIV2001 Cross-cultural Perspectives and complete coursework in humanities, arts, social sciences, and behavioral sciences to support broader professional understanding. Scientific preparation includes Anatomy and Physiology I with laboratory work and mathematics courses such as College Algebra, Precalculus, or Calculus, depending on student placement and goals. The major-specific curriculum focuses directly on healthcare systems, medical terminology, legal policy, statistics, and healthcare administration. Students complete Anatomy and Physiology II with laboratory training, Accounting Principles I, and a statistics course to strengthen analytical and quantitative skills. Specialized courses such as MEDT4301 American Health Care and MEDT4303 Global Health help students understand healthcare systems, public health structures, and healthcare delivery models both in the United States and internationally. MEDT4302 Health Care Law and Policy introduces students to healthcare regulations, patient privacy laws, ethics, compliance, and legal standards that govern healthcare organizations. MEDT2006 Medical Terminology ensures students can understand and communicate accurately using professional medical language. Together, these courses prepare students for the professional phase of the joint program with Rutgers University School of Health Professions. Graduates are prepared for careers involving electronic health records management, healthcare analytics, medical coding support, healthcare compliance, patient information systems, and healthcare administration. The program develops a balance of healthcare expertise, communication ability, data management skills, and technological literacy that is increasingly important in modern healthcare environments driven by digital records, analytics, and healthcare information technology.
