COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University is designed to prepare students with strong theoretical knowledge, technical expertise, and practical problem-solving skills needed for careers in modern computing and advanced graduate studies. The program follows the student outcomes established by the Computing Accreditation Commission of ABET, ensuring that graduates develop the ability to analyze complex computing problems, design and evaluate computing-based solutions, communicate effectively in professional environments, apply ethical and legal principles in computing practice, function successfully in team settings, and apply software development and computer science fundamentals to real-world challenges. The curriculum begins with foundational coursework in computer programming, digital system design, calculus, communication, and university preparation. Students then advance into subjects such as data structures and algorithms, assembly language programming, database systems, probability and statistics, computing security, computer networks, operating systems, software system design, computer organization, and mathematical foundations of computer science. The program also includes technical electives, humanities coursework, senior project preparation, and a final senior project that allows students to apply their technical knowledge to practical computing problems. Students choose one of three concentrations: Cybersecurity and Information Assurance, Big Data Analytics, or Game and Mobile Application Development. The Cybersecurity and Information Assurance concentration focuses on Linux system administration, firewalls, intrusion detection systems, cryptography, cybersecurity foundations, and information security, preparing students to assess vulnerabilities and apply security practices to protect systems and data. Students in this concentration are eligible to receive a Certificate of Completion from the university’s Center for Cybersecurity and Information Assurance under the NSA and DHS designated CAE-CDE program. The Big Data Analytics concentration develops expertise in cloud computing, machine learning, data mining, advanced databases, and big data analytics, enabling students to analyze large-scale data systems and apply advanced analytics methods. The Game and Mobile Application Development concentration focuses on mobile application development, game programming, artificial intelligence, internet programming, and machine learning, preparing students to develop multimedia applications and software across multiple platforms. Overall, the program combines mathematics, engineering, computing theory, programming, and specialized technical training to prepare graduates for successful careers in software development, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, data analytics, game development, and advanced computing industries.
