COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Clinical Laboratory Science at Fairleigh Dickinson University is a university-based training program designed to prepare students for careers as Clinical or Medical Laboratory Scientists through a combination of academic study and professional clinical training. The program requires a minimum of 138 credits for graduation and is completed through three years of undergraduate coursework at FDU followed by 15 months of clinical training at Rutgers University School of Health Professions. Students complete at least 93 credits at FDU, including 40 credits of General Education courses and 53 credits in the major, before transitioning to Rutgers for an additional 45 credits of advanced clinical training. The curriculum provides a strong scientific and healthcare-focused foundation through studies in biology, chemistry, microbiology, genetics, anatomy and physiology, immunology, pathophysiology, biochemistry, and molecular cell biology. Students also develop laboratory skills through extensive laboratory coursework in biological sciences and chemistry. General Education requirements strengthen communication, ethical reasoning, cultural understanding, quantitative analysis, and technological literacy through courses such as Composition, Professional Communication, Bioethics, Cross-cultural Perspectives, and healthcare information systems. Mathematics and statistics courses further develop analytical and quantitative reasoning skills essential for laboratory science and medical data analysis. The program also includes university core courses that support personal and professional development. Students entering the program may be required to complete prerequisite reading, writing, or mathematics courses based on placement assessment scores. During the clinical training phase at Rutgers, students gain hands-on professional experience in advanced laboratory settings while applying scientific principles and diagnostic techniques used in modern healthcare laboratories. The program prepares graduates for careers in hospitals, diagnostic laboratories, research institutions, public health agencies, pharmaceutical companies, and other healthcare environments by combining rigorous academic preparation, laboratory expertise, communication skills, and clinical experience essential for modern medical laboratory science and patient care.
