COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Individualized Studies (BAIS) offers several interdisciplinary concentrations designed to help students explore social, environmental, political, health-related, and cultural issues while developing strong research, communication, and critical thinking skills. Across all concentrations, students complete core requirements including courses in international perspectives, advanced writing, research methods, and a senior capstone project. Students also complete introductory survey courses in areas such as world history, geography, sociology, politics, or environmental science before progressing to specialized upper-level coursework. The program emphasizes flexibility, allowing students to combine academic study with internships, independent research, study abroad opportunities, and practical learning experiences. The Environmental Studies concentration focuses on sustainability and the relationship between human society and the environment. Students study environmental science, geography, management, research methods, and data mapping to prepare for careers in sustainable business, government, law, advocacy, consulting, journalism, education, and nonprofit organizations. The Health and Society concentration explores how culture, politics, economics, and social conditions shape health, illness, and healthcare systems. Students examine topics such as sociology of health, gender and disability, food and society, and global development, preparing for careers in medicine, nursing, public health, social work, health policy, advocacy, and genetic counseling. The Hispanic Studies concentration provides students with an understanding of Latin American history, culture, politics, geography, and Latino communities in the United States. Led primarily by international faculty, the program prepares students for careers in diplomacy, journalism, education, business, international relations, law, museums, and nonprofit organizations. Program learning outcomes across these concentrations include developing the ability to analyze social and cultural issues critically, conduct research, interpret data, communicate effectively, and apply interdisciplinary knowledge to real-world challenges. Students also gain valuable leadership, ethical reasoning, and civic engagement skills that prepare them for professional success and active participation in global society.
