COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Sport, Fitness and Recreation Leadership at DePaul University offers a comprehensive, cohort-based curriculum designed to develop advanced leadership, management, and professional skills in the sports and recreation industry. The program consists of approximately 58 credit hours and includes 12 core courses, two required summer seminars, and a final capstone research project. Core coursework covers key areas such as organizational leadership and management, facility and risk management, strategic communication and marketing, program and event management, sport psychology, ethics and diversity, advanced health and science concepts, legal issues, finance and revenue generation, and data-driven decision-making.The curriculum is delivered primarily online, allowing working professionals to balance their studies with career commitments, while also participating in two in-person summer seminars that provide networking opportunities and exposure to industry leaders. These seminars also serve as a platform for students to present their research and engage in professional development. A key component of the program is the capstone project, where students conduct independent research related to their career interests, guided by faculty mentorship and culminating in a formal presentation.The curriculum emphasizes the holistic care and well-being of athletes and individuals in fitness and recreation settings, while also addressing sociocultural, ethical, and legal aspects of the industry. Students develop expertise in leadership, administration, marketing, and athlete care, along with the ability to analyze current trends and issues in the field. Through a combination of theoretical learning, applied research, and professional networking, the program prepares graduates for leadership roles in athletic departments, fitness and recreation facilities, corporate wellness programs, and sports organizations, equipping them with the skills needed to lead effectively in a dynamic and evolving industry.
