COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Refugee and Forced Migration Studies at DePaul University features a multidisciplinary curriculum that combines theoretical knowledge with practical, field-based experience to prepare students for careers in humanitarian work, policy, and advocacy. The program requires approximately 48.5 quarter credit hours and includes core coursework, electives, and two required practicums. Core courses cover key areas such as asylum and refugee law and policy, international human rights, conflict management, public health and forced migration, humanitarian logistics, and refugee mental health, providing students with a comprehensive understanding of the legal, political, and social dimensions of forced migration.In the first year, students focus on foundational concepts, including legal frameworks, human rights principles, and the historical and global context of migration, while also being introduced to health and policy issues affecting displaced populations. In the second year, the curriculum emphasizes applied learning through research methods courses and extensive fieldwork, allowing students to evaluate and apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. A key component of the program is the completion of two practicums or internships, where students gain hands-on experience working with refugee-focused organizations, both locally and internationally, often completing hundreds of hours of fieldwork.Students also complete elective courses that allow them to explore specialized interests such as public health, global policy, social justice, or community development, tailoring the program to their career goals. The curriculum emphasizes interdisciplinary learning, drawing from fields such as law, history, international studies, and public service, while fostering critical thinking, ethical decision-making, and cultural awareness.By integrating academic study with experiential training, the program equips students with the analytical, practical, and advocacy skills needed to address the causes and consequences of forced migration. Graduates are prepared to work in government agencies, nonprofit organizations, international institutions, or research roles, contributing to effective solutions for displaced populations worldwide.
