COURSE CURRICULUM

DePaul University’s Master’s in Pure Mathematics is designed for students seeking advanced study in mathematics, whether to prepare for doctoral work or to teach at the community college level. The program provides rigorous training in both foundational and specialized areas of mathematics, allowing students to explore classic theorems, abstract structures, and advanced mathematical concepts. Students can focus their research and coursework in areas such as algebra, including representation theory, Lie theory, Hopf algebras, and quantum groups; analysis, including harmonic, Fourier, and functional analysis, operator algebras, and spectral geometry; as well as combinatorics, dynamical systems, number theory, and probability theory. The curriculum emphasizes both theoretical understanding and analytical problem-solving, providing the skills necessary for original research and mathematical reasoning. Courses are offered in the evening on the Lincoln Park Campus, making the program accessible for students who wish to balance professional or personal commitments with graduate study. The program is flexible in pace, allowing students to complete the degree in two years by taking two courses per quarter, with the option to enroll in summer courses for accelerated progress, or in one year by taking three courses per quarter, also with optional summer courses. In addition to coursework, students are encouraged to engage in independent study and guided research projects, developing expertise in their chosen area of focus while honing the ability to formulate and solve complex mathematical problems.
