COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts in Film and Television Directing at DePaul University’s School of Cinematic Arts is a highly selective program designed to develop a filmmaker’s artistic voice through a rigorous and comprehensive curriculum. Students are trained in all major disciplines of filmmaking, including directing, screenwriting, cinematography, editing, and production, while also gaining an understanding of the business side of the film and television industry. The program emphasizes hands-on learning and real-world experience, allowing students to build a strong portfolio that includes multiple original short films as well as a significant thesis film that showcases their creative vision and technical expertise. Students benefit from exceptional resources, including access to a 60,000-square-foot production facility at Cinespace Chicago Film Studios, one of the largest production hubs in North America and home to major television productions such as Chicago Fire, The Bear, The Chi, and Power Book IV: Force. In addition, students have access to professional-grade equipment, including Alexa, Amira, and RED cameras, as well as lighting systems, production vans, and other industry-standard tools. The program’s degree requirements are structured to ensure students gain both technical mastery and creative development, culminating in a thesis film that serves as the final demonstration of their skills.
