COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animation MFA program at DePaul University is structured around a studio-based, project-focused learning model that runs continuously from fall through spring. The program emphasizes hands-on creation, where students dedicate most of their time to developing original animated films under close mentorship from faculty. In the first year, students work intensively on a major film project while receiving guidance from one of the Animation MFA Co-Chairs, including internationally recognized artists and animators Amy Lockhart and Jacob Ciocci. Alongside this, students select additional faculty mentors from the animation department who provide regular feedback and support to help refine their artistic direction and technical execution.A key feature of the program is its focus on developing a personal creative vision. Students are encouraged to push the boundaries of their artistic abilities and explore animation as a powerful expressive medium. In the second year, students begin work on their MFA thesis project, which becomes the central focus of their studies. They form a thesis committee that provides ongoing critique and mentorship, ensuring continuous improvement and professional-level development of their final work. The cohort model allows students to study and create alongside peers, encouraging collaboration, discussion, and shared artistic growth throughout the program.In addition to production work, students receive rigorous academic training in animation history, critical theory, and essential artistic principles. The curriculum spans a wide range of animation disciplines, including traditional animation such as hand-drawn and stop motion techniques, as well as 3D animation, modeling, character design, storyboarding, game art, motion graphics, and visual effects. Advanced coursework also covers screenwriting, editing, sound design, and directing for film and television, helping students understand the full production pipeline.Students benefit from access to advanced facilities and professional tools, including industry-standard animation software, Cintiq labs, 3D printing studios, stop motion stages, fabrication spaces, motion capture systems, motion control technology, and high-quality sound studios. The program also encourages collaboration with performers, musicians, and voice actors from DePaul’s Theatre School and School of Music, allowing MFA students to create highly polished and professional-level animated films that reflect both technical mastery and strong artistic vision.
