COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master’s in Visual Art Education (MA/MEd) at DePaul University offers a distinctive and practice-oriented curriculum that blends artistic development, educational theory, and community engagement to prepare students for teaching visual art at the PreK–12 level. A unique feature of the program is its collaboration with Stockyard Institute, which connects students with local artists, educators, activists, and community members to promote creative engagement across Chicago. Students also benefit from the partnership with the DePaul Art Museum through The Learning Studio initiative, where they contribute to museum-based education, curriculum design, and community outreach projects. The curriculum emphasizes hands-on learning, with students gaining practical teaching experience in diverse school settings while working alongside experienced art educators. Coursework integrates studio practice, pedagogy, and social justice perspectives, helping students develop inclusive and meaningful art education strategies. The program is designed to be completed in two years and leads to a Master’s degree along with licensure to teach visual art in grades PreK–12. Classes are typically held in the evenings at the Lincoln Park Campus, providing flexibility for students, although schedules may vary for those enrolled in the Chicago Teacher Residency program.
