COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Sociology at DePaul University features a well-rounded curriculum that emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical research skills to analyze human society. The program focuses on sociological theory, covering both classical and modern perspectives, allowing students to understand the foundational ideas and evolving frameworks that shape the discipline. Alongside theory, students receive extensive training in research methods, including quantitative, qualitative, ethnographic, and mixed-method approaches, enabling them to design studies, collect and analyze data, and interpret complex social phenomena. The curriculum also highlights the analysis of contemporary societies, communities, and cultures, encouraging students to examine real-world issues such as inequality, urban life, social institutions, and cultural dynamics through a critical and analytical lens. Courses are offered on weekday evenings from Monday through Thursday at the Lincoln Park Campus, providing flexibility for working professionals. The program is structured to be completed in two years on a full-time schedule, typically involving two courses per quarter across three quarters each year. Through this combination of theoretical depth, methodological training, and applied analysis, the curriculum prepares students for careers in research, policy, social services, and related fields, as well as for further graduate study.
