COURSE CURRICULUM

The Secondary Education MA/MEd at DePaul University offers a flexible and comprehensive curriculum designed to prepare students for teaching careers at the middle and high school levels. The program provides the option to pursue an initial Illinois Teaching License (PEL) with a Secondary Education (grades 5–12) endorsement, or for already licensed teachers to add this endorsement to their existing credentials. Students select a content specialization in areas such as biology, chemistry, English, environmental science, history, mathematics, physics, or social sciences, allowing them to develop deep subject expertise alongside pedagogical skills. The curriculum combines coursework in teaching methods, curriculum design, and student development with practical field experiences, ensuring that students gain hands-on classroom experience. Courses are offered in flexible formats, including weekday evening classes at the Lincoln Park Campus, online, or in hybrid formats, making the program accessible for working professionals. Fieldwork and student teaching are completed during weekdays in real school settings, providing opportunities to apply instructional strategies and build confidence as educators. Designed to be completed in approximately two years, the program integrates theory and practice to prepare graduates to become effective, engaging, and impactful secondary school teachers.
