COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in International Studies at DePaul University is a two-year interdisciplinary graduate program designed to help students critically analyze global systems, political structures, and issues of inequality through a strong foundation in theory and research. The program emphasizes understanding how power operates in international contexts and how historical, political, and economic forces shape global relationships and development outcomes. Students are trained to think critically about globalization, international conflict, development, human rights, migration, and environmental challenges, while also learning how to connect theoretical perspectives with real-world applications. The curriculum is structured to build both analytical and research skills, beginning with foundational courses that introduce key concepts in international studies, research methods, and global analysis. Students then progress into core courses that explore international relations, global political economy, and critical theories that examine inequality and systems of power. In addition to core requirements, students select elective courses that allow them to focus on specific areas of interest such as human rights, migration, environmental politics, regional studies, global development, and international organizations. This flexibility enables students to tailor the program to their academic interests and career goals. A significant component of the program is its emphasis on advanced research training, where students complete a sequence of research-focused courses that prepare them for independent scholarly work. The program culminates in either a capstone project or a master’s thesis, where students conduct original research on a global issue of their choice. Throughout the program, students develop strong writing, analytical, and critical thinking skills that prepare them for careers in international organizations, nonprofits, government, policy analysis, research institutions, or further doctoral study. Evening classes offered at the Lincoln Park Campus make the program accessible for working professionals, and the degree can typically be completed in about two years, providing a flexible yet rigorous path for advanced study in international affairs.
