COURSE CURRICULUM

The School Counseling specialization within the master’s in Counseling program at DePaul University is designed to prepare students for professional licensure as school counselors through the Illinois State Board of Education. Accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Educational Programs, the program ensures that students meet high professional standards while gaining the knowledge and practical skills needed to work in educational settings. Graduates are well-prepared to serve in both public and private K–12 schools, supporting students’ academic, social, and emotional development.A key focus of the program is data-driven counseling, where students learn how to use data to assess student needs, design effective interventions, and evaluate outcomes. This approach helps future school counselors make informed decisions that improve student success and well-being. The curriculum also emphasizes counseling techniques, educational systems, and collaboration with teachers, parents, and administrators to create supportive learning environments.Students have the option to pursue an initial Professional Educator License with a School Counselor endorsement, making it suitable for those entering the education field. Those who already hold a teaching license can add the School Counselor endorsement to expand their qualifications and career opportunities.
