COURSE CURRICULUM

The Early Childhood Education program at DePaul University provides a structured curriculum designed to prepare future educators to teach and support young learners from infancy through second grade in a variety of school and childcare settings.Students begin with foundational coursework such as Child Growth and Development, which explores how children develop physically, emotionally, socially, and cognitively. This is complemented by Child and Family studies, which helps future educators understand the role of family and community in early learning.Health and safety are addressed through Child Health, Safety and Nutrition, ensuring that educators can support children’s well-being in classroom environments. Communication and literacy development are strengthened through Children's Literature, Reading Instruction, and Speech and Language Development, all of which focus on building early communication and literacy skills.Instructional design is developed through Curriculum Development and Teaching Strategies, where students learn how to plan lessons, manage classrooms, and create engaging learning experiences for young children. Math and Science Instruction in Early Childhood prepares students to introduce foundational STEM concepts in age-appropriate ways.The program also includes Art and Exceptional Child Development and Instruction, helping future educators support creativity while also meeting the needs of children with diverse learning abilities.Overall, the coursework equips students with the theoretical knowledge and practical teaching skills needed to effectively educate, support, and inspire young children in early childhood learning environments.
