COURSE CURRICULUM

The Jazz Studies curriculum is designed to provide students with a strong foundation in both the theoretical and practical aspects of jazz performance and musicianship. Through courses such as Essentials of Jazz, students are introduced to the fundamental elements of the genre, including its structure, style, and historical development. Jazz Arranging and Composition allows students to explore their creativity by learning how to write and arrange music for various ensembles, helping them develop their own artistic voice. Participation in Jazz Chamber Ensemble offers valuable performance experience in smaller group settings, encouraging collaboration, communication, and improvisational skills.In addition, Jazz History and Style provides a deeper understanding of the evolution of jazz, examining influential artists, movements, and cultural contexts that have shaped the genre over time. Jazz Improvisation is a core component of the program, enabling students to build confidence and spontaneity in their performances while mastering techniques essential to jazz expression. The course on Jazz Rhythm Section Techniques focuses on the roles and interactions of rhythm section instruments, such as piano, bass, and drums, emphasizing timing, coordination, and groove. Together, these courses create a well-rounded learning experience that prepares students for professional careers in performance, composition, and music education while fostering creativity, discipline, and a deep appreciation for jazz.
