COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Dramaturgy/Criticism program at DePaul University offers a focused curriculum that develops students’ abilities in critical analysis, writing, and theatrical interpretation.Students begin with foundational courses such as Theatre Studies and History of Dramatic Literature, which provide a broad understanding of theatre history, major dramatic works, and evolving performance traditions. These courses help students situate plays and performances within cultural and historical contexts.Core analytical training is developed through Script Analysis, where students learn how to closely examine dramatic texts, understand structure, character development, and thematic meaning. Dramatic Theory further deepens their understanding of how theatre functions as an art form and cultural practice.Writing and critical communication are central to the program. Courses such as Writing about the Arts and Dramatic Criticism train students to articulate informed opinions, critique performances, and communicate insights clearly across academic and professional settings.Students also explore Directing, which provides practical experience in interpreting scripts and guiding theatrical performances, as well as Theatre Crew, which gives them hands-on exposure to the technical and collaborative aspects of theatre production.Overall, the curriculum prepares students to become dramaturgs, critics, and arts professionals who can analyze, interpret, and communicate about theatre effectively while also contributing to the creative and production processes in performance environments.
