COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts (BFA) in Costume Technology program at DePaul University provides a structured curriculum focused on developing the technical, artistic, and production skills required to create professional costumes for theatre, film, and entertainment industries.Students begin with foundational craft and construction skills such as Costume Crafts: Dyeing and Painting, where they learn fabric treatment and color application techniques. They also study Costume Construction I: Pattern Drafting and Costume Construction I: Draping, which teach how to create garment patterns and shape costumes directly on mannequins for accurate fit and design realization.Historical understanding is developed through History of Costume, Hair, and Makeup, where students explore how fashion and costume styles have evolved across different eras. This knowledge helps them create historically accurate and stylistically appropriate costumes for stage and screen productions.The curriculum also includes Costume Management, which prepares students to organize, coordinate, and oversee costume production processes in professional environments. This includes managing resources, timelines, and wardrobe operations during productions.Advanced technical training is provided in Costume Crafts: Millinery, where students learn hat-making and accessory construction, as well as Costume Construction II: Period Costumes/20th Century Tailoring/Special Topics, which focuses on more complex garment building, tailoring techniques, and specialized costume work for specific performance requirements.Overall, the program trains students to combine craftsmanship, historical knowledge, and production management skills to build fully realized costumes that support storytelling in theatre and entertainment.
