COURSE CURRICULUM

The Music Composition program at DePaul University provides students with a strong foundation in both traditional and contemporary approaches to composing music. Core coursework includes Composition, where students develop original musical works and refine their creative voice, and Orchestration, which focuses on writing and arranging music for different instruments and ensembles. Counterpoint teaches the relationships between independent musical lines, helping students understand structure and harmony in greater depth.Analytical Studies allows students to examine and interpret musical works, strengthening their understanding of form, style, and technique. Electro-Acoustic Music introduces modern approaches to sound creation using technology, digital tools, and experimental methods. Large Ensemble provides practical experience writing for full orchestral or large group settings, helping students learn how to adapt their music for performance by larger musical forces.Together, these courses develop both technical skill and artistic creativity, preparing students for careers in composition, performance, music production, and related fields within the professional music industry.
