COURSE CURRICULUM

The African and Black Diaspora Studies (ABD) program at DePaul University offers a diverse and interdisciplinary curriculum that explores the global experiences of African and Black communities. Coursework includes Africa: Peoples, Cultures, Ideas and Movements, which introduces students to the historical and cultural foundations of the African continent, and Afro-Caribbean and Afro-Latin America, focusing on the cultural and social dynamics of African-descended populations in these regions. Courses like Harlem Renaissance and Negritude examine influential cultural and literary movements that shaped Black identity and expression across the world.Students also engage with socially relevant topics through classes such as Blacks and Love, which explores relationships, identity, and cultural perspectives, and Black Feminist Theories in a U.S. Context, which highlights the contributions and perspectives of Black women in feminist thought. Principles of African Art provides insight into artistic traditions and cultural expression, while Black Migration to the North, 1877–1941 examines historical migration patterns and their social impact. Additionally, Religions of Africa and the Diaspora explores spiritual traditions and belief systems across African and diasporic communities. Together, these courses offer a well-rounded understanding of history, culture, identity, and social change within the African Diaspora.
