COURSE CURRICULUM

The Secondary Education program requires a minimum of 120 credit hours, combining general education and major-specific courses, with students selecting one endorsement area for licensure, including Literacy, Mathematics, Science Education with a STEM emphasis, or Social Sciences. All major courses must be completed with a grade of C or higher, and none may be taken on a Pass/Fail basis except for the student teaching internship. General education content courses required for licensure include Human and Cognitive Development, History of the American People, and Child and Adolescent Psychology. Foundational education courses cover Introduction to American Education, Media and Technology in the Classroom, Teaching in Diverse Classrooms, and Characteristics and Instruction of Exceptional Learners. Core secondary education courses include Foundations and Ethics of American Education, Teaching at the Secondary Level, Literacy Instruction in Content Areas, Assessment and Management of Middle and Secondary Grades, and subject-specific methods courses aligned with the chosen endorsement. Students complete a student teaching internship in their subject area, paired with a seminar to support practical classroom experience. For those in the Lutheran Teacher Education track, a required methods course and a theology minor with courses in Martin Luther’s Catechisms, Old and New Testament, Church History, Augsburg Confession, Ancient Creeds, and Liturgy and Worship are included. The program totals 48 credit hours for the major and specialized coursework, ensuring comprehensive preparation for secondary teaching licensure.
